About Pinehurst

Old Pinehurst
New Pinehurst

In 1895 James Walker Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of “ravaged timberland in the sandhills of North Carolina,” just down the road from our headquarters in Durham. Tufts’ peers called him a fool. But they didn’t realize that the ravaged wasteland would soon become the only place to host all 5 of the USGA’s most important events.

The Pinehurst course has challenged the best golfers in the world during the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, the U.S. Amateur Championships, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, the TOUR Championships, the U.S. Senior Open, and what we're all here for, the U.S. Open Championship.

This year will be the fourth time the resort has hosted the U.S. Open since 2014 and the first time in over a century that the USGA has awarded four U.S. Opens to a single site in 25 years.
